Washington DC Dog Walking + Pet Care Service

John Seager

john_small

John co-founded Brighter Days in the summer of 2006.

A product of humble Perkasie, PA ("gateway to Quakertown"), he grew up with a cat, a dog, a series of rabbits, and assorted smaller animals that were well-loved but in retrospect rather hard to tell apart.

A dual degree in music and English obviously qualifies him in the fields of pet care and business administration. Since moving to the District in 2002, John held mostly library jobs prior to starting Brighter Days. Much of his non-work time is spent drumming in bands that perennially sadden his mother and generally confuse those who wander within earshot.

His sartorial choices belie his love of diversity. He thinks democracy is a smashing idea and eagerly awaits its arrival in North America.

Devin Miller

Devin joined Brighter Days in January of 2007 after a two-year dog-walking stint with another agency.  He enjoys biking, yelling, the outdoors, shouting, and spur-of-the-moment travel.

Devin owns a welsh terrier that walks on two legs and talks like a human.  You should hear these two conversate! Learning impeccable manners and style from his owner, Angus is well on his way to knitting his own fancy sweaters.

Devin is widely regarded as the Youtube of human beings, and when he quits Brighter Days the collective has come to a consesus that they will pay Devin to come to meetings just to distract us from doing actual work.

Sara Baghdadi

Sara joined Brighter Days in November 2008.

She's long been a wanderer and eventually concluded she might as well get paid for it, first with another dog-walking agency and now with Brighter Days.

When she is not putting sun glasses on dogs, Sara fields regular requests for haircuts from friends despite featuring a 'do that could best be described as, "I got up twelve seconds ago and . . . wait, what?"

As of late Sara has been trying her hand at fashion designer, and can adeptly sew you something form fitting that will make you want to jazzercise. Do you like fluorescent orange mesh? Sara has it in spades.

Sonya Mendoza

More of a California gurl than Katy Perry, Sonya skipped across the country from her hometown of Claremont, CA and somehow landed here in the slightly-less-sunny District of Columbia.

Most of her "free" time is between the hours of 11pm and 6am, during which she often does street outreach for HIPS (a local harm reduction organization that works with sex workers).  Occasionally Sonya is also free on Saturday mornings, and as a coordinator for the Washington Area Clinic Defense Task Force, she gets to stand outside of the Planned Parenthood on 16th Street and receive the gifts of prayer and plastic fetuses from abortion protestors.

Despite her American University degree in (human) psychology, Sonya evidently felt more of a connection with our four-legged companions; when she joined Brighter Days in February 2010, a "cuteness craze" spread through the collective like wild fire and we were all inspired to take cell phone pics of our dogs and cats with renewed enthusiasm.
Prior to joining Brighter Days, Sonya worked at Diesel, and her history in the industry has enabled her to balance fashion AND function--not an easy task for the dog walker in DC!  So if you see a stylin' lady on the streets of Petworth who manages to bike around, walk dogs, and look great, know that your eyes have been graced by the infamous Sonya Mendoza.

Diana Vashti

diana

Diana Maria Vashti spent the first 23 years of her life in the beautiful but cold Great Lakes state of Michigan. She spent most of her time at the beaches, in the dunes, or at a concert. Diana started playing music around age 10 and continues to do so every day of her life. She plays bass in local bands Fell Types and Mary-Christ.

After growing up with a Golden Retriever named Rusty, three cockatiels (Jasmine, Alladin, and Baby) and a Maltese/Poodle mix named Lily she was overjoyed to join Brighter Days to spend so much time with so many cute and awesome animals. She currently has two cats: a maine coon mix named Nico Lou, and a tabby named Lilian Tuffy.

Diana's passions in life are all rooted in social justice and things that are delicious. She loves to discuss feminism over a great oatmeal stout, or progressive politics over a good stir-fry. She collects vinyl and likes role playing video games. She also has an intense love for graphic novels and Batman.

Diana is a amateur bike mechanic and hopes to one day bike across the United States.

She is a tattooed, pierced, gay-married, proud dork, and general bada$$.

Abigail DeRoberts

Abby_Cleo1

Abigail hails from the west side.  The mid-west side, that is!

After being kicked out of her hometown of Columbus, Ohio for wearing too many different shades of gold at one time, Abby settled in DC to study Latin American studies at American University.  She also did a short stint in Cuba working at a rum-juice box factory and perfecting her salsa dancing skills.

When she returned to the states in June of 2009, there were a bunch of dogs barking down her door to walk them, and after working for another dog walking company, she joined Brighter Days in November of 2009.

You can see Abby on the streets of Dupont with her furry friends, in the WPFW engineering room with the Latino Media Collective, or dancing up a storm all over DC.  Just dont look too closely, or you might be blinded by her sparkles.

Orion Peter

Our newest convert, Orion Peter was hired to put the paw to the pavement with Brighter Days in the winter of 2010. Although highly lucrative, he left behind a five year career in lawn care and video store clerking for the chance to work in a collectively-owned enterprise. Frequently mistaken for one the dudes in ZZ Top, he spends his time hoping his own death metal band might one day open for them, maybe at a county or state fair even..

Father of Auggie, one of Washington's most photogenic and popular puggles, Orion is often seen accompanying her to various social functions and managing her ever growing fan base. Applying his now-professional petcare knowledge to Brighter Days new "coverage" position, Orion enjoys the unique chance to befriend all the collective's dogs and walk in different neighborhoods throughout DC on a rotating basis. This allows Brighter Days to ensure consistent coverage and comfort while walkers enjoy the over six weeks of paid vacation we provide one another.

Preston Gover

preston

Preston was raised by a whippet named Frisky. This is one reason he communicates so well with dogs, especially sighthounds.

Before Brighter Days, Preston worked as an operations coordinator for Save the Children. He has also worked with children who have visual impairments and adults with developmental disabilities.

When not spending time with dogs, he can be found in his community garden plot, at home cooking, or getting out of town.
